CLAIMING A VEHICLE

VEHICLE OWNER

The owner of an impounded vehicle must have the following in order to claim a vehicle:

  • State issued Driver's License or photo ID card

  • Current automobile insurance*

  • Current automobile registration*

  • Certificate of Title or Bill of Sale, if other than the registered owner

  • If ownership has changed within the last 30 days, a copy of the computer registration printout from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

  • Unless towed or trailered from impound, a licensed driver must be present to drive the vehicle, and the driver's ID must be presented to Keene PD for verification.

    * Required if driving the vehicle from impound.

VEHICLE DRIVER (At the time the vehicle was impounded)

The person who was the driver of the impounded vehicle when it was impounded must have the following in order to claim it:

  • State issued Driver's License or photo ID card

  • Current automobile insurance*

  • Current automobile registration*

  • Right of Possession Affidavit, available here or at Keene PD

  • Unless towed or trailered from impound, a licensed driver must be present to drive the vehicle, and the driver's ID must be presented to Keene PD for verification.

    * Required if driving the vehicle from impound.

If there is reason to believe the driver of the impounded vehicle did not have permission to be in possession of the vehicle, it will not be released to the original driver.

THIRD PARTY

A third party, authorized by the owner of an impounded vehicle, must have the following in order to claim the vehicle:

  • State issued Driver's License or photo ID card

  • Current automobile insurance*

  • Current automobile registration*

  • Release of Impound to 3rd Party Affidavit, available here or at Keene PD, signed and notarized by the vehicle owner

  • If the vehicle owner is not the registered owner, additional ownership documents are required

  • Unless towed or trailered from impound, a licensed driver must be present to drive the vehicle, and the driver's ID must be presented to Keene PD for verification.

    * Required if driving the vehicle from impound.


       

LIEN HOLDER

The lien holder of an impounded vehicle must have the following in order to claim a vehicle:

  • State issued Driver's License or photo ID card

  • Legal Repossession documents

  • Unless towed or trailered from impound, a licensed driver must be present to drive the vehicle, and the driver's ID must be presented to Keene PD for verification.
